He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy, and from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with a master’s degree in political theory. While working on a doctoral degree in philosophy at the University of South Carolina, he was a teaching assistant for one year, teaching Introduction to Philosophy and Ethics.
